The CBLDF and The Importance of Free Speech
The protection of free speech and the right for art to explore, reveal, and educate us on stories from all walks of marginalized life are very important to us at The Freakopolis Geekery.
Like many comic shops, independent bookstores, publishers, creators, and citizens, we are strong supporters of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and their Banned Books Week. Many books and comics are banned or challenged for content deemed inappropriate by someone in the public who takes issue with their message. Much of the time these publications are stories from underprivileged walks of life or make humor of more serious subject matter as to inspire alternative ways of thinking about it. And that is good! We love these books for expanding our horizons and bringing to light stories from those who differ from us, our family, or our local culture.
